In the earlier stages they are specially written in order that simplicity Of language may be combined with subject matter suitable to the age of the readers, the texts written for French children being, if Simple in language, too childish in matter, or too difficult in language when suitable in matter. The passages not specially written are selected from works of recognised literary merit.
