Synopsis

Excerpt from Webster's Primary School Dictionary: A Dictionary of the English Language Designed for Use in Primary Schools, Abridged From Webster's International Dictionary

As Webster's International Dictionary, published in 1890, took the place of Webster's Unabridged Dictionary, so this little manual replaces the well known primary Dxc'rromuw originally prepared by Dr. Web ster and published by him in 1833; subsequently revised by his son, Mr. William G. Webster, in 1857; and again by Mr. William A. Wheeler, in 1867. Both of these editors brought the smaller work into conformity with the most recent edition of the Unabridged Dictionary. This book has been made entirely afresh from the International Dictionary. It gives many words and definitions not found in former editions. It shows the pronunciation of words by respellings with the phonetic markings explained in the key lines below the pages, and thus clearly indicates the sound of unaccented syllables.

While this work is designed for young pupils, older readers will find it a convenient reference book for the pronunciation and spelling of words in ordinary use. It also gives a trustworthy clew to their essen tial meanings as clearly as can be done within such briet Limits. Umbeen made to comprehend much information by the use of concise state ments and by omitting derived words (mostly adverbs, adjectives, and abstract nouns) which are sufficiently explained by the meaning of the root word. Particular care has been taken not to confuse words alike in spelling and sound, but difiering in etymology and meaning.
