This scholarly look explores how Campbellism, Mormonism, and spiritualist ideas emerged and spread from Pittsburgh to the wider frontier. In accessible prose, the book follows key figures and pivotal moments that shaped reform movements. It examines how Baptists, Presbyterians, and other groups interacted, split, and redefined what it meant to follow the Bible in a young nation. Readers will encounter debates over baptism, church governance, and the boundaries between orthodoxy and reform, all set against a vivid historical backdrop.

How early American Baptists and their neighbors influenced new denominations
The roles of Walter Scott, Alexander Campbell, and Sidney Rigdon in shaping reform thought
The emergence of the Disciples and the later Mormon movement, with attention to social and doctrinal currents
Contested claims about Book of Mormon origins and Spaulding manuscripts, and what they reveal about religious authority

Ideal for readers of religious history, American culture, and the origins of modern faiths, this edition sheds light on how ideas traveled, clashed, and sometimes fused to reframe American spirituality.
