The Norse Discovery of America presents one of the earliest scholarly examinations of the Viking voyages to North America. Drawing upon the Icelandic sagas and other historical sources, the work explores the expeditions that carried Norse sailors across the North Atlantic centuries before the age of Columbus.
The volume includes translations and analysis of medieval texts such as the Saga of Erik the Red and the Saga of the Greenlanders, which recount the journeys of Norse explorers from Scandinavia to Iceland, Greenland, and the lands they called Vinland. These accounts describe the voyages of figures such as Leif Erikson and other early explorers who ventured into unknown waters around the year 1000.
Combining historical research with careful textual study, the authors examine the geography, chronology, and cultural background of the sagas while considering the evidence for early transatlantic contact. Their work helped bring serious scholarly attention to the Norse voyages and contributed to the broader historical discussion of exploration in the North Atlantic world.
Today The Norse Discovery of America remains an important early study of Viking exploration and the historical traditions preserved in the Icelandic sagas.
