About the Author

J. R. Clark Hall was an English scholar, lexicographer, and translator best remembered for his work on Old English language and literature. His Concise Anglo-Saxon Dictionary became a widely used reference for students and readers of Anglo-Saxon texts, offering a practical route into the vocabulary of early English prose and poetry. He also produced an influential prose translation of Beowulf, further connecting his name with the study and teaching of Old English.Clark Hall's work belongs to the period when philology, textual study, and medieval language scholarship were central to English literary education. His dictionary remains useful because it serves a clear purpose: helping readers understand the words of a language that stands at the root of English but is distant enough to require careful study. For readers of Beowulf, Anglo-Saxon poetry, early chronicles, religious prose, and medieval English language history, his reference work continues to have practical value.
