Scottie, a decadent university administrator with a weakness for drink and women, visits his daughter Tina who is studying in Aberystwyth. She wants nothing to do with him because of the shabby way he has treated his ex-wife. After a heavy drinking session, he murders an injured IRA man he finds on the beach and steals the documents the man was carrying. The IRA cell try to hunt him down to recover the papers and exert pressure on him by kidnapping his daughter. Despite his cowardice, he decides that he will do one decent thing in his life and try to rescue his daughter. With the help of three university students he decodes the documents, discovers the IRA arms cache and then does a deal to recover Tina. The deal results in her freedom and his death.

This book was very well written, a real page turner. The characters were very believable . The author made you care what happens in the end!
A very enjoyable and exciting book. As the book goes on, it gets increasingly tenser and I found myself reading quickly to see what happens next!
The action is well-paced and left me on the edge of my seat. It became a heart-pounding ordeal to follow along Scottie's mishaps. Will he escape this time? Where does he go from there? Things in the story get intricate the deeper into it the reader gets. Both sides were well thought-out in their pursuits. They complimented nicely. The author presents both the IRA and Scottie as people you could run into anywhere. It makes them both sympathetic. There are brief moments of doubt when it comes to what side you're cheering for. The ending, and what leads up to it, is something between James Bond and Scooby-Doo. The composition is masterful, and so is the execution.
