About the Author

Julia Donaldson is the outrageously talented, prize-winning author of the world's best-loved children's books, and was the 2011-2013 British Children's Laureate. Her picture books include the modern classic The Gruffalo, which has sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Julia also writes fiction, including the Princess Mirror-Belle series illustrated by Lydia Monks, as well as poems, plays and songs – and her brilliant live shows are always in demand. Julia and her husband Malcolm divide their time between West Sussex and Edinburgh.

I've been performing since I was four - when I played the Princess in "Aladdin" and got my first laugh! I studied English & Drama at Bristol University and graduated with a 2:1. After four years working in production for BBC Television, the lure of the other side of the cameras proved too strong and I trained as an actor at Drama Studio London. Since 1983 I've performed in theatres all over the British Isles & Germany, in plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Wilde, Coward, as well as Ayckbourn, Pinter, Willy Russell, Neil Simon and numerous new writers. Working at the National Theatre was a career highlight, as was my year with the BBC Radio Drama Company. I've worked extensively on radio (including the role of Bridget in The Archers) and recorded hundreds of unabridged audiobooks (some award-winning); appearing on television in series such as Doctors, Judge John Deed, Alistair McGowan's Big Impression, Comedy Nation & Channel 4's cult hit As If. Recently I've discovered a love of working on film and am avidly exploring this new avenue. I also teach students of acting and direct & produce plays for the theatre. My first company was called A Share in the Pig Factory, taken from Virginia Woolf's words: "Truth is only to be spoken by those women whose fathers were pork butchers and left them a share in the pig factory." There's been some progress since she wrote this in 1935 - but, though history may separate us, what she and I share is a passionate commitment to the truth in our work.
