A treasure trove of letters reveals with intimate detail how a woman finds her voice as daughter, wife and mother in the face of extraordinary odds: the Great Depression, World War II, and immigration from a small town in Tennessee to big city life in Johannesburg, South Africa. By turns, an engaging, funny, and moving read.

Robin Lawton’s life story is a reflection of her connections with America, her mother’s homeland, and South Africa, her father’s homeland. Robin spent her first thirty-five years in South Africa where she completed her studies in English literature and taught at what is now known as the University of Westville before emigrating to the United States with her husband and two sons in 1973. In 1979, Robin joined the faculty at Linfield College, a small liberal arts college in Oregon, where she taught for twenty-five years. She now devotes herself to her writing.
