A cocktail of Ken Follet, Wilbur Smith and Jeffrey Archer, this sweeping saga is a perfect fit for historical fiction readers, a powerful journey that stays with you long after the final page.
In 1887, Sebastian Brigandshaw is exiled from England by his abusive father, leaving behind his childhood sweetheart, Emily.
Arriving in southern Africa, he meets a Boer hunter, Tinus, who takes him under his wing and offers him a chance to rebuild his life.
For the first time, Sebastian begins to find purpose, friendship, and a place to belong.
But the past is not finished with him.
When he learns of a heart-twisting secret about his lost love, he is forced to travel back to England, and into a devastating conflict that will change everything.

Exiled by his father... Forced to abandon his childhood sweetheart... One man will risk everything and fight for what he holds dear. When Sebastian Brigandshaw is cast aside by his Sea Captain father so his family will be received into the aristocratic establishment, his world is turned upside down. But the heartache and perils mounting against him are no match for the love he bears Emily. In the face of mounting dangers, Sebastian risks his life to take back the love that was ripped from his clutches. The Boer War threatens the land Sebastian and his family have grown to love. With the Boer rebels bent on freedom from the British, Sebastian must make the hardest decision of his life - join the fight or dare be named a coward. With the land he loves at stake, and his relationship to Emily vulnerable, where will Sebastian's loyalty lie?
When the micro surpasses the macro
A loving, productive multi-lingual multi-ethnic micro society develops on an isolated farm, only to be fractured by the Boer War. Male characters, even the grandfather grown "potty," are excellently developed. Though a long read, this book engages the mind on historical issues while forcing the reader to confront contemporary issues as well.
Very enjoyable
Peter Rimmer never fails to capture the savage beauty of the land. He manages to tell his story with a balanced viewpoint, between the Boers, the indigenous peoples and the British in their struggle for supremacy.
A must read!
A similar author to Wilbur Smith. Set in South Africa with very interesting characters.
