CHAPTER 1

NARCISSISM, SELF-INTEREST & VIOLENCE — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The pain in the world we may have no control over, but this book will guide you to gain control over yourself and your responses to painful experiences. Why is this so important? Painful experiences are unavoidable in the world we live in, which is polluted with the silent social mental illness called narcissism. Because of this silent social mental illness, many people react intensely to painful experiences by retaliating aggressively, which they view as normal or justifiable; alternatively, many react through flight into depression and isolation. Such reactions destroy mental health, as well as the mental health of others.

Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, warns that the biggest criminals or con artists you will ever meet often appear to be honest, are well-educated, are often attractive, may have advanced degrees, hold high positions of leadership, but may lack moral character (Kiyosaki &Trump, 2011). Many wealthy people are rarely convicted of any crimes or held accountable for wrong-doing. In our society, we often view rich, beautiful people in powerful positions as God or believe what they believe about themselves — that they are superior people. On the other hand, we tend to equate poor, unattractive, uneducated people with criminals.

Many people in top leadership positions with the power to hire and fire cause painful experiences, lack empathy, lack emotional and spiritual maturity, and lack strength of character when it comes to the needs of others. This kind of leadership may account for why there is so little progress in the area of mental health. Individuals who engage in such self-interest behaviors that hurt others have the personality of narcissism, which I refer to as a social mental illness. These narcissistic individuals who appear to be so honest and who often are well educated can turn into criminals when things do not go their way. Social scientists have found that narcissists steeped in superiority can become criminals when their egos are threatened in some way (Baumeister, Heatherton, & Tice, 1993; Baumeister, Smart, & Boden, 1996; Morf & Rhodewalt 2001).

Social scientists have observed a relationship between narcissism and aggression (Fossati, Borroni, Eisenberg, and Maffei, 2010). Many narcissists have irrational belief
