Synopsis

There is an emotional immediacy which invites everyone to respond (or not) to life experiences and events. That response might be ever so simple or grand. A poet is aware and awake to these responses. He/she when stirred by passion finds a soulful desire to record in creative language what the poet finds within the response.

Beginning with the dedication, Jan Shomp presents a panorama of topics all the way from her first child's cry for God's milk to her own cry for universal peace. The poet reveals the presence of God in the most mundane to find the often neglected presence shimmering in unnoticed glory.

"Searching" is about finding God in every aspect of life. The reader is encouraged to search within, as they walk with the author in her "Searching". Upon these pages the words ring with eloquence and grace in speaking simply about "what is".

There is a call in this collection of poems to become conscious of God presence in one's own life and love. The reader will find the sensual imagery of the souls own "Searching" for life, love and meaning.

Enjoy! Read! Wake up! Be!

About this title

About the Author

Jan Schomp grew up in Ohio. There she began weaving the tapestry of her life, like that of fine Irish linen. In working hard to learn and practice her Catholic religion she focused more upon her relationship with the Divine.

Every time life began to fall apart for her or tug at the seams, she noticed that the Divine was in the seams as well! She came to the realization that her relationship with the Divine was absolutely everywhere in her life. This was the point when the design on the tapestry began to emerge as a love affair. She realized religion was not the only expression of God's love. For her, God's love was in every experience of her life. It was a deepening of communication between God and her. Jan began to reflect on how this special relationship manifested itself in every aspect of life.

Thus “Searching” a collection of poems was born. These poems are her heartfelt findings in the cloth of her own life and sometimes in the lives of others, seams and all!

Jan worked as a Director of Pastoral Care for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston and as a Pastoral Associate in Florida. She is currently a Spiritual Director. In her younger days she taught in several Catholic Schools.

For Jan though, her most important work was raising her 8 children. As she experienced the wonder of her children and their interactions with her and each other she felt a great love for each unique child. Still in times when life is painful, it is love itself that continues to weave the multicolored threads of life. Jan writes her poetry as a result of her constant searching for this ultimate reality, love hidden in the everyday colors of life, even in the threads woven in the crevices of the seams.
