In a world of deceit and drug cartels, a military past comes in handy. Surviving the mean streets of New Orleans, a teen-age boy runs away from home to seek the grand adventures he has only read about. When he lies about his age to join the United States Coast Guard, he escapes his troubled past. It isn't until a decade later he transfers to San Francisco where he immediately runs afoul and faces a severe punishment. In lieu of a court martial, he volunteers for combat duty in Vietnam where three of his friends are killed in friendly fire. Deeply mourning the loss, he releases his rage against an Air Force Officer's club and is punished with a less than honorable discharge. In a life changing moment, he begins a new career as an undercover narcotics agent and enters into the world of drug and human trafficking that is sponsored by a dear old friend. Undergoing torture when his cover is blown, there is nothing else he can do but pray to be saved.

It is difficult to write an adequate review of a novel of this depth, and scope. Author Jim Gilliam has created an outstanding work based on an isolated combat tragedy. The reader soon bonds with young Tim Kelly whose misfortunes are usually caused by his refusal to submit to injustice, and his impatience with fools. The author skillfully balances Tim Kelly's emotional and rebellions conduct with his level-headed and responsible nature. His rebelliousness kept him in trouble but his level-headed responsible side may cost him his life. Criminals and law officers to young ladies in distress the characters and action are all melded into a seamless smooth running plot that is easy to identify with. But what happens to Tim Kelly's fiance, does she revive? I sincerely hope Jim Gilliam has a sequel ready for the press.

Jim Gilliam's novel moves like a freight train through a tight, spellbinding storyline. An engaging and fast-paced suspense thriller, Point Deception is a riveting page-turner, based on true events.
