Synopsis

Legends and fairytales are beloved by children, but older kids, teenagers and adults often feel as though they've outgrown them. This new collection of completely original short stories by Kelly Morris Dreher will give readers of all ages a reason to fall in love with this genre again. Each story in "The Green Locket: Legends and Lessons from Near and Far" features teenage characters that take the reader with them on a journey to "once upon a time, in a land far away." Readers visit exotic far-off places and travel back to a time where "happily ever after" existed, but took a lot of heart and bravery to achieve. Each story even features its own "lesson," reminding the reader that life's most valued virtues can be theirs if they make the right choices. Highlights include: "The Dragon and the Lotus"- the story of the incredible role one young girl plays in preserving China- and herself- on a lonely journey. "The Elephant King"- the tale of two tribal brothers in a Namibian wonderland fighting to find their places among their people, in nature and in each other's hearts. "Ronan and Riona"- an Irish love story that features two teenagers who learn to survive on love alone until they get the ultimate opportunity. "The Wise Fool"- set in the time of court and jester, this intense tale shows what can be learned when a lordly king and his clever jester go head-to-head. "The Golden Book"- a charming story of a bookish French girl who meets a charismatic American boy (and a few incredible others) in the strangest of ways while on a quest to save a friend. "The Well in the Woods"- In this story, an unexpected meeting between two unlikely friends goes to show that love has no limits.

About the Author

After working as a middle school teacher for several years, Kelly Morris Dreher recognized that there was a hole in the literary transition her students were making from children's books to the Young Adult genre. As a lifelong lover of legends, myths and fairytales, she decided to fill the gap with her stories of her own. It is her hope that this volume of deeply thoughtful, but thematically wholesome stories will help to emotionally expand her readers (of all ages) as they make their own literary journeys. "The Green Locket: Legends and Lessons from Near and Far" is her first published book. Morris Dreher is also a playwright and theatre director who has produced three original, full-length productions. She continues to write, and is currently working on another string of "Legends and Lessons" stories. When she's not writing or spending time with her husband, Sean, and her two cats, she can be found cooking, working in the theatre and teaching 11th grade English Literature. Morris Dreher is originally from Sidman, Pennsylvania, where her family still resides. She currently lives in Knoxville, Tennessee.
