About the Author

Victoria Barker is a primary school governor with many years of experience as an educationalist: she has two PhDs and has had a career teaching at university level. It was, however, as a parent that she acquired the information in these pages. The information was gathered while preparing a daughter and son for the 11+ and 13+ examinations respectively. Her approach was hands-on, tutor-free, and by and large a very happy one.

She was inspired to write this book because, during the course of these admissions, she realised that she and other parents were often making crucial decisions about their children's futures on the basis of incomplete information. And after the admissions were finalised, far too many parents were commenting: 'If only I knew then what I know now, I would have done things slightly differently ...'

In this book, she passes on the results of several years of research, many, many school visits and innumerable hours of discussion with Heads, Registrars, Bursars, teachers, fellow parents and forum communicants.
