Synopsis

Patrick is an African grey parrot who lives in the jungle in central Africa. His Great-Grandpa Gilbert will soon be one hundred years old and Patrick wants to send him a birthday greeting. There is just one big problem — Great-Grandpa Gilbert lives thousands of miles away in Australia!

How can Patrick solve his problem?

Follow his birthday message as it travels with the help of Patrick’s animal friends both great and small.

Aimed at the four-to-nine-years age group, Patrick's Birthday Message is an entertaining children's reader in verse involving migrating swallows, whales, dolphins and, of course, intrepid parrots.

The first of Gail Clarke's eight books to date, 'Patrick' has been included in her entertaining presentations to schoolchildren around the world since 2010 — more than 35,000 children in Hong Kong, Phuket, Bangkok, Dubai, Sri Lanka, Kenya and England have now enjoyed learning about animal migration, writing and illustrating, and, of course, hearing Gail's stories. In these presentations, Gail is always enthusiastically assisted by glove puppets of Patrick, Great-Grandpa Gilbert, Cosmos the Curious Whale and Chameleon.

I have got to say that this is such a beautiful book. I have read it to my son about ten times and he really loves the flow of the writing and the imagery that goes with it. I certainly would recommend this book to all parents who read to there children in the evenings and just love the underlying meanings the book resounds. Thank you Gail, I look forward to future adventures you have created and undoubtedly so do my children.

5 Stars From this jungle to Perth is too far for a meeting,' Thought Patrick. 'I'll just have to send him a greeting."

This author is going places! Rhymes were well-done, lengthy and often informative which added tremendous value to this children's book. Artwork was phenomenal with my favorites being the multitude of swallows with the silhouettes of the buildings along the bottom of the page and the conga line of whales beneath the waves passing along the birthday message. Book also provides some "Parrot Points"(factoids) and a quiz at the end of which you can visit a website to get the answers (smart!) I can't help but give this five full stars and heartily recommend given the amount of effort that went into this fine book.

5 Stars Three wonderful Books by brymaruk on 2 March 2014

Format: Paperback

My inner child has been delighted! I loved the bright beautiful colours of the animals and surroundings, the friendly warm characters and tales told in cheerful rhyme gently emphasising the importance of friendship and family values. Beautifully illustrated by the author herself, none of these three books. "Patrick's Birthday Message", "Searching for Skye" and "Cosmos the Curious Whale" will disappoint you, I'm sure.

About the Author

Gail Clarke is a retired primary school teacher with over 35 years of teaching children. Originally from Northern Ireland, Gail trained as a teacher at Queen's University, Belfast. Following a move to Hong Kong, she then taught at the German Swiss International School for 27 years, retiring as deputy head of the international primary department. In 2004, Gail moved with her husband, David Clarke, to Tuscany, Italy. This 'migration' set her thinking about animals that cover huge distances every year. This led to her first illustrated children's book, Patrick's Birthday Message about a parrot in central Africa who wants to send a message to a relative thousands of miles away? Perhaps he could ask for help from the migrating animals. On her writing ‘journey’ Gail learned many amazing facts about animals which were the inspiration for her second and third books Searching for Skye and Cosmos the Curious Whale. As well as writing, illustrating and publishing her books, Gail enjoys visiting schools, talking to children, and sharing her stories with them. She now lives in both Italy and Phuket, but most years she and her husband also travel to Hong Kong, England and Kenya to see their family of four children and six grandchildren. Everywhere she goes, Gail spends time visiting schools, whether they are huge international schools with thousands of children in Hong Kong and Phuket or tiny village schools in Kenya and England. Her presentations to children are assisted by puppets of Patrick the parrot and Cosmos the whale. Learn more about Gail at her website: www.gailclarkeauthor.com
