9781493104697: Blueprint for a Literate Nation How You Can Help

Synopsis

Millions of American children today are struggling in school systems largely unable to meet their needs, and the problem will only deepen if we continue to approach it with anything less than total dedication to a solution. The widespread illiteracy and learning difficulty afflicting our children is not "somebody else's problem"; it is a severe threat to the up-and-coming generation of thinkers and workers-America's future workforce, electorate, and global community. We know what must be done to meet this threat, we see the changes happening already, and we must commit to keeping up our momentum. The time has come to turn the tide away from our country's impending economic and societal catastrophe and toward the reemergence of a literate, dynamic America. This book not only provides facts and statistics that will scare and disturb you but also relates stories and scientific findings that will inspire you to make your own contributions to the cause. By following the intuitive, data-validated plan presented in these pages, you can help to steer the American education system in the right direction and keep it afloat-before it takes the entire nation down with it.

About the Author

Cinthia Coletti is the CEO of Literate Nation, founder of the Coletti Institute for Education and Career Achievement and Haan Foundation for Children. She is a leader determined to succeed in changing the problem of literacy for two-thirds of US children and, in so doing, transforming not only their lives but also our own. Serving decades in business-as chief executive of several corporations and on many boards-she turns her attention to radically reconceptualizing literacy itself with intellectual, social, ethical, and research-based solutions.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - As the inheritors of both the technological innovations of the information age and the social and economic unrest of the world, the generation now in our schools will, to a great extent, determine whether America stays at the top or falls behind in the world order. It is imperative therefore that our students master the skills essential to our times-but statistics show that a huge majority of American children struggle with the skill most essential to modern life. Our society is fueled by literacy, and if we do not stand up for these struggling learners now, the consequences for both the individuals and society as a whole will be disastrous. Although literacy rates are a nationwide issue, the solution lies surprisingly close to home: Grassroots teams across the country have already begun the movement to reform education, and their successes have been monumental. All that remains is for the message to spread, the spark to ignite. You can be the next leader of change, voicing a clear and compelling call to action. This book will show you how. Just as learning difficulties are not the fault of the student, ineffective instruction is rarely the fault of the teacher, or even of the school district. The grassroots teams that have brought such comprehensive reforms to their districts have done so by harnessing all the tools available to them in the high-speed, interconnected modern world: in-depth scientific research, far-reaching social media, and direct alliances with influential political champions. The Common Core State Standards already implemented in many states are proof of their success. With a firm commitment to opening opportunities for the next generation, and with the right information to guide you along your journey, you too can make a difference in America's future.
