Howard Back fought in World War I and went on to become a successful businessman, world traveler, and art collector. In 1922 he accompanied Howard Carter on the expedition that found Tutankhamen's tomb. He emigrated to the United States in 1930 where he eventually opened a fine arts and antiques business. He died in 1946. Craig Mathews is author of Western Fly-Fishing Strategies and the proprietor of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, Montana. Robert H. Berls is the editor of the Anglers' Club Bulletin. Dan Callaghan, a retired lawyer, provided the photographs for Fishing Yellowstone Waters and other books.
Howard Back's charming guide to the rich waters in and near Yellowstone National Park has been revered as a classic for sixty-five years. The original edition is much sought after, but hard to find; it is not only one of the most readable and entertaining fly-fishing memoirs but a practical handbook that is still wise and useful. In one of the first books to bring the many rivers of Yellowstone to the attention of the fishing public, Back gave accurate descriptions of all the best streams and lakes in the area and invaluable information about where to fish and at what season. It is particularly interesting to compare Back's descriptions of what was available then to Dan Callaghan's photographs of what is there now.Graced with more than sixty modern photographs by Dan Callaghan, a new introduction by Craig Mathews, and the first accurate biography of the hitherto unknown Back by Robert H. Berls, this new edition will be a delight to all who love Yellowstone Country. (8 X 101/4, 182 pages, b&w photos, maps)
