Pueblo Colorado Wash is an integral feature of the cultural landscape preserved at Hubbell Trading Post National Historic Site (HUTR). In 2008, the park superintendent asked the NPS Water Resources Division (WRD) to assess the condition of the riparian-wetland system in response to these and other restoration and management activities. During June 24-26, 2008, WRD staff used the Bureau of Land Management’s Proper Functioning Condition method to evaluate the condition of the riparian zone. The Southern Colorado Plateau I&M network (SCPN) established a long-term program to monitor vegetation, channel morphology, and hydrologic conditions in Pueblo Colorado Wash. These data proved useful in determining if appropriate conditions exist to support a self-sustaining riparian wetland plant community and in identifying appropriate areas for additional riparian-wetland vegetation plantings.
