About the Author

As a teacher, youth leader, and clergywoman, Myra Nagel has led groups of young people for more years than she cares to count. At first, after her daughter talked her into leading a group of third graders, she wondered how such dear, sweet children could have such BIG voices. She thought she'd scream. And then she did. As the years went by, however, she began to find ways to let loud children have loud fun--constructively--and to help them have quiet fun too. She discovered with some surprise that she really enjoyed working with young people--in the church, the school, and the community. One day a co-leader said, "You should write a book." The idea stuck. Myra contacted hundreds of youth leaders and teachers, asking how they handled group discipline. Using their responses to supplement her own experience, she self-published "What to Do Instead of Screaming." Although she had no real marketing plan, she ordered 5,000 copies from a local printer and sent a free book to many youth organizations. Before long those first copies disappeared. Over the 22 years the book was in print, Myra and her family personally packaged and mailed over 70,000 copies to teachers and youth leaders. After she let "What to Do Instead of Screaming" go out of print, she continued to receive calls from youth leaders who were trying to find copies of it. Their disappointment at the news that the book was no longer available has prompted her to issue this new, slightly revised edition. Myra has written church school curricula for all ages and several non-fiction books including "Talking with Your Child about Prayer" and "Journey to the Cross," both published by United Church Press. She also authored two mystery novels, "Downside Seven" and "Runaway Poet." She and her husband Don reside in Punta Gorda, Florida, where Myra volunteers as an advocate for abused and neglected children through the national C.A.S.A. (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) program.
