Synopsis

There have been Jews living and working in China since before 100 B.C.E. Jews of The Middle Kingdom follows the trail of these people from that time until 1950. The common knowledge of the role the Jews played in Europe overshadows the Jews of China. The history of these people is the story of Baghdadi Jews from the Middle East as they traveled the silk roads and eventually settled in China. The book also marks the role the European Jews played in the growth of China. The Jewish population and the Chinese lived side by side without conflict for over 1000 years. The history is traced city by city across the byways of Asia and details how the Jewish settlement added to the opening of China to the West.
