My story is about the frustrating, stressful, humorous and precious tender moments I have shared with my Mother, as we entered into the Alzheimer's World. Not only am I dealing with my own self-doubts and fears of what I should be doing; I am witnessing the bizarre transformation of a very sweet, kind and gentle lady into a scared, mean and ornery woman, that I barely recognize. Then there are the days of seeing pure joy in her eyes, and a smile on her face, with a child-like innocence. Alzheimer's disease is so much more than being forgetful - it changes a person's very soul.

Carolyn Mers was born and raised in the metro St. Louis area. She is a wife, mother, daughter and grandmother. Throughout her 43 year marriage, she has moved to several mid-west states in support of her husbands IT career. In 2004, her husband took an early retirement so they could return to the St. Louis area to be supporting partners in the early stages of her mother's battle with Alzheimer's disease. The Alzheimer's Roller Coaster is based on Carolyn's journal writing during those difficult early days.
