Karen Carson, aka Karen McGuire, was born in Brooklyn, raised on Long Island, and grew up quickly when she landed her first secretarial job in Manhattan, New York, at 17. She considers herself a writer first, although she has dabbled in acting, singing, photography, real estate, doll customizing, and publishing. In fact, as of this writing, she is the editor and publisher of a monthly publication entitled “Designer Dolls Magazine.” In her teens she wrote poetry, in her twenties during her daily commute from Long Island to Manhattan, she wrote mostly plays, as she loved the interaction and dialog between the characters she created. She soon moved to Greenwich Village and studied acting at the Actors Playhouse, where she shared her playwriting talents. The owners/directors of the theatre enjoyed her “flair for dialog” and allowed her to cast her friends in the roles of her short plays and actually produce them at the theatre on Monday evenings when the shows were free. In the eighties, she won a contest she found in the Show Business newspaper, held by a theatre group who chose her play over 350 others to be produced off-Broadway in Manhattan in a small theatre in midtown. When the crowd cheered “Author! Author!” She remembers her sweet father gleaming, as he said, “Karen, if you never do another thing, just know that I’m so proud of you tonight!” Having lived in Manhattan, as well as Los Angeles, and quite a few places in between, Carson continues to write, mostly plays and screenplays, and even took a shot at writing a musical. A couple of her scripts have been considered for production, she also won second place for a TV pilot contest in California, being promised a writer’s position if the comedy ever took off. However, nothing has been done with the project as of today. With the ease of self-publishing, she decided to show the world her talents, instead of having these works sit in a box in her attic for all of her life (or, rather, these days many of them were on discs and memory sticks.) Enjoy the work of a writer who truly loves putting words in the mouths of remarkable characters, and believes that typing is also (still) a skill.
