Too independent for control, too foolish to stop to think or change, the unlikeable legend centers himself as the world turns in circles & he observes the decline & fall of the East & West. Coyote continues, civilization continues, falling continues, & story-telling continues—popcorn anyone? These are traditional trickster stories applied to modern civilization, as sophisticated robots and new gods vie for attention in the rush of consumption.

Yulalona Lopez’ life strangely parallels that of the hero of her novels, Coyote. She started out as an animal and local legend to become an iconic image of mythical humor. She was raised by a Tohono O’odham father and schooled at local institutions to survive on the fringes of the modern monstrous megalith. Through the magic of words, Lopez has taken on a more spiritual existence as she explores the range of behavior of animals and readers and their incessant desire to be special and rich. Like Coyote, Lopez collects masks and bits of ruined technology. And, like Coyote, through her errors and greed, she points out the perils of selfishness in a limited world. Unlike Coyote, she can control her drooling and her odd sexual urges. She divides her time between west Tucson and south Tucson, Arizona, with occasional trips to her two-room den in North Tucson. She is an international sophisticate who only expresses herself locally and literally.
