Geboren am 30.11.1817 in Garding bei Schleswig. Gestorben am 01.11.1903 in Charlottenburg. Mommsen war Pfarrerssohn und nahm 1848 an der Märzrevolution teil. Er wurde 1848 Professor der Rechte in Leipzig, 1852 Professor für Römisches Recht im Zürich. Er war ein scharfer Gegner Bismarcks. Als erster Deutscher erhielt er 1902 den Nobelpreis für Literatur.
