Synopsis

Inspired by life's obstacles, poet Kimplachat Downs promotes the empowerment of women in her poetry collection, Protecting Your Innocence. She encourages women to tell their stories, resulting in the shedding of excess baggage, bitter pasts, and vague future views about love. The key mission is for women to find their way back home resuming the role that it is okay to be loved beyond their pain. Downs is an ambitious young woman with a story to tell, and she has found her passion in writing poetry for and about women. She offers inspiration to women, encouraging them to find hope as they move beyond their daily challenges. With her strong views and voice, she conveys a message of hope to the world of women. In her poetry, she draws from her personal pain, recalling the countless times she has been lost and drawn her strength from God and from those she holds close - her family and friends. Protecting Your Innocence provides guidance to women who need to know their worth and to discover who they truly are: women of substance.

CHAPTER 1

So in Love

He stands six foot two with a smooth complexion, complemented by abeautiful smile with honey dippers on each side. He wears a low, fadedhaircut, tapered to his neck and leading to his broad shoulders. He hasbeen blessed with a God-given physique. His presence takes a room bystorm, leaving all women wondering who he is. What woman wouldn'twant him? You just met him, and it seems he does everything exactly theway you like it—the good-morning texts, sweet voice mails, and roses justbecause it's Tuesday.

Now that you have dated for a while, conversations start to arise inreference to a relationship. He tells you he is willing to take that step. Youstill aren't intimate physically, yet the thoughts are there. You just want tobe sure it's the right time.

As time passes, you open up to this man, unfolding all of your pastexperiences, the things you don't like, and, most importantly, the thingsthat hurt you. You are at the point in your life that you want to be themissus. Still fearful of what the future holds, you take a chance. He ensuresyou that, with him, you don't have to worry about the past because he isyour present and future. He is the one!

Mr. Right

He aims only to please.
Nothing else is acceptable in his eyes.
He tells you how beautiful you are
and how happy he is to have you in his life.
He is a family man as it appears.
He interacts with your kids,
catering to your every need.

In hope that the fears from your past
you will now release,
the fear of getting hurt,
the scars held within.
He tells you it is okay to love him,
for he is there until the end.

The end of time?
How good is that to hear?
Finally someone who is more than
willing to help you conquer and get past your fears.

Your time has finally come—
the time in which you know you
will be the only one.

In your thoughts,
your future now looks bright.
You exhale as you now know that he
is Mr. Right.

I Think I'm Falling

I remember when he first smiled at me.
How could I forget?
His face spoke a thousand words,
not verbally,
yet the chemistry was so strong.

I understood the silent mysteries.
From that moment we exchanged numbers,
he was fine indeed!
I never looked at it as becoming something.

After the first conversation,
we had an instant connection.
We completed each other's thoughts,
so similar,
a newfound hypothesis with no explanation.

Defined as an educated guess at what the future may hold,
we went past the hurdles of life,
past the cards that may unfold.

For when we are together,
from the ground we both are raised.
Not subject to gravity,
we experience a life worth living together
for the rest of our days.

So strange to be able to say or even think,
a total stranger doesn't know he can make
you feel like this.

Weeks have gone by.
Months are soon to come.
Is it too early for me
to think and feel that he is the one?

I Can Trust Him

He tells me how he thinks about me all the time.
If he doesn't get a call,
his day is incomplete.
Y'all, this man really loves me.

He sees no one in his future,
no other person besides me.
He goes out of his way to be creative.
He keeps me guessing on his next move,
the small things to brighten my day.

In his arms, I rest as I feel
what it is to have security.

I love you.
Those words
are as a melody to my ears.
With no repercussions
for loving him back,
no downsides of drawing near.

I've waited so long for this.
I am finally here.
No longer do I have to be concerned
about being hurt,
for I know,
without any doubt
God has sent him here.

I now know what it is to be happy.
With God and him,
I am complete.
Nothing would I trade for him.
I praise God for this blessing.
I can trust him to go
and do whatever he has to do,
not having to worry
about anything being done in secret.

He invites me to tag along.
Yet I don't trip.
I look him in the face,
not hesitating to say,
"Enjoy yourself, baby. I trust you."

A great feeling,
nothing else can compare.
I finally have a trustworthy man here.

I'm Just Saying

I want him to stand six foot two
with a chocolate-milk complexion.
Broad shoulders,
dimples,
pretty white teeth,
and a smile only sent from heaven.

I want him to be a God-fearing man.
Open-minded,
open to change,
uninterested in material things.
He doesn't have to make it rain.

I don't want him to be pretty,
nor scared to get dirty.
I want a man constantly on the grind,
one who is in it to win it
and willing to let everyone know
I am his and he is mine.

I want him to touch and agree
with the things I say,
but have a firm enough backbone,
strong enough to put me in my place.

I want him to love his mother and
respect her in the way he should.
However, know that he has his own household
and knows when to say no when it's for the good.

I want him to know that it's our relationship
and his mother will not be dictating
anything going on inside my home.
I want him to cut the apron strings from Mommy
and know he is grown.

I want him to have grown man swag,
no baggy jeans or oversized shirts.
Not trying to keep up with the youngstas,
trying to set an image,
knowing it won't work.

I want him to appreciate me for the woman I am.
I want him to know I am a good woman
and, by my side,
I deserve a good man.

It goes both ways.
In return, I will vow
that I will commit only to him as long as he
understands that three is a crowd.

That's right.
I said three.
He needs to know from the door
that I will not tolerate a man who cheats.

Don't get me wrong.
Mistakes will happen.
That's not a mistake.
When you take the time to know the chick,
especially when you start acting different,
locking your phone, and
coming in the house with a fresh shower scent.

He doesn't have to be perfect.
I will accept him,
flaws and all.

Somebody asked me what I wanted in a man.
I'm just saying.

Passionate Love

Passionate lovemaking on the beach at night,
as you hold me in your arms so gentle,
but tight.

You caress my body from head to toe.
The way you whisper my name,
no one will ever know.
Being with you is like a gentle stream.

I lie back
and smile as you take me places
that I could never dream.

I think about how I was lucky enough
to find someone like you.
Someone to care,
respect,
and talk my problems through.
Not a day that goes by
that I don't think of you.
The cards,
the roses,
and all the little things you do.

As I lie back and smile,
drifting and thinking
about my deepest fantasy,
you give that final push,
taking me to ecstasy.

You said you won't hurt me,
and this I do believe.
Before I met you,
I honestly thought every man had a goal for a girl in which
he wanted to achieve.
But you don't,
and I can't compare you to any other man.

I am just happy to have given us this chance.
I love you,
and I thank the Lord above
for my God-sent man.
I now know what it is to experience
passionate love.

My Love Potion

He has his cape on,
an "S" on his chest.
I have been waiting on him,
the one who will
tell me in his arms I could rest.

On his shoulders, my problems
I can lie,
for he vows to love me in the midst
of struggling and hard times.

He cares nothing about my past.
He comes to restore,
allowing my tears to be his fuel
and determination to get past
the locked doors
surrounding my heart,
unable to be opened.

He is my hero.
He is my secret love potion.

A Man

Love is patient.
Love is kind.
He lives by this.

Love does not envy
or keep track of wrong.
Forever does he sing this song?

Love conquers and prevails
over any problems that can arise.

Even when I feel like I have no strength left to fight,
he grabs my hands
and guides me until I can see the light.

In this world,
I am all he sees.
He tells me,
"It's only God and me."
"Nice!" I think in my head.

I have a true sheep,
not a wolf dressed in
sheep's clothing.

My Blessing

God,
thank you for blessing me with this man!
He acknowledges you
and allows you to be the head.
He is humble,
generous,
and kind.
But most importantly,
he is all mine.

I never thought I would see this day.
I would walk down the aisle with my father,
and at the altar, he would give me away.

I never could have imagined in a thousand years
that you would send me a true man
to love me beyond my fears.

In my younger days,
the things I went through
caused me to doubt
I could possibly love
the hell out of anyone one day,
but you have caused me to see it is so.

No longer do I live in fear,
no longer am I to hide my feelings
and for others put on a show.

I am so grateful for the gift you gave,
someone so passionate
and here to love me for the rest of my days.

I Love You

I want you to love me like no one else ever has.
I want you to love me until my future becomes my past.
I want you to love me until the sky bleeds red.
I want you to love me until there are no words left to be said.
I want you to love me from the depths of your soul.
I want you to love me when your teeth fall out,
your hair turns gray,
and together we grow old.

I want you to love me in the midst of any circumstance.
I want you to love me so much until no other woman is in existence.
I want you to love me because that is what you desire to do.

I want you to love me in so many ways,
for this is how I love you.

Possibility

I have envisioned all the possible fairy tales
or close to what can be a reality.
For there is no such thing as a perfect man,
yet that depends on what you perceive perfect to be.

Whether he be tall,
short
chunky,
thick,
or slim,
the most important thing should
be if he treats you as a woman.

A woman,
a gift sent from above.
If he loves you with his all,
an unconditional love,
this is relevant to what you desire.

You yourself are not perfect,
so embrace
the possibilities that your love
put together.
They can elevate you higher,
above the things that have you hesitant
to believe the words in which he will speak.
Allow him a chance
to be the one who will sweep you off
your feet.

He Proposed

I came in the house and smelled a pleasing scent.
I dropped my purse and noticed some candles were burning.
The lights were dim, and the music was on low.
As I walked to my room, I noticed a note on my bedroom door.
It said my bathwater was ran, so get comfortable and relax.

I entered into the bathroom and couldn't believe my eyes.
Bubbles were overflowing with rose pedals.
New lingerie, a pink matching set, was hung up.
A glass of Moscato was on the side.
With a smile from ear to ear, I did exactly what it said.

After I soaked for a while, I got out and got dressed.
I glanced in the mirror, being sure my hair was in place.

With lipstick, he wrote on the glass,
"Next step, go to the dining room and sit where your dinner has been
placed."

I walked down the hall, laughing.
This man I had not seen.
I walked to the dining room table and its only one place setting.

I was in shock to see smoked salmon, wild rice, and broccoli.
My baby had cooked, and I must say it was good.

I am lost.
He has not done these things before.
I guess he wanted to show me he could.

In amazement, I take down another glass of wine.
Now tipsy, as I listen to my favorite song, by Ginuwine.
I'm in love.
I'm in love.
And it's a good thing.
I'm thinking this man knows what he's doing.
He's trying to get my cookies.

I didn't see another note, so I pulled my chair out.
I'm about to head to my bedroom, I suppose.

When I got up and turned around ...
I saw him on one knee.
He finally proposed.

Your Happily Ever After

From the streets to the corporate world, he made it!
He made it through the very things that held him back.
He made it through the negativity,
along with the ignorance of people telling him
any type of success in his lifetime is something
he would always lack.

A hard worker and strong-minded man,
he steps in to clean up shattered pieces of heartbreak
left from the previous men.

He stands alone,
confident,
and bold
and with style
and such pizzazz.

He does not repeat his mistakes.
He learns and pushes forward from his past.
He places you on a pedestal and doesn't look for anything in return.
He thrives on your happiness,
indulging in the satisfaction of knowing your heart he has earned.

Aside from you, nothing else matters.
He is a family man!
He is your happily ever after.

CHAPTER 2

False Advertisement(He Really Didn't Mean It)

Okay, so the true person shows himself, and to your surprise, he is notwho he told you he was. He is inconsiderate, arrogant, and disrespectful.Bottom line, he is not the one. This man showed himself at first as havingit all together. When you started dating, he would do anything to keep asmile on your face. You have fallen in love with the ideal of being in love. What's wrong with this? I will tell you what. It is a one-way street.

An old song tells the story better. You first found love on a two-waystreet, yet after a while, you lost it on a lonely highway. Sound familiar?Wake up, honey! You are doing it by yourself, and it takes two. You werecoming home to a man in the beginning who was a go-getter, working twojobs, handling bills, and helping out with the kids. Those days are over. Hecan't provide for you or the family because he is taking care of his mother. There's nothing wrong with that, but he is not with her. He is with you.

You sit around smiling at them, only because you want to feel accepted. His lies have found him out. The sweet voice mails have stopped, the roseshave died, and his compliments stand to be nothing more than a cluster ofwords that hold no meaning. You still want him, so you stick it out, hopingthings will go back to the way they were. In your mind, you think you canchange him, only if he sees that you will be the one who will hold himdown at all costs.

How much are you willing to put up with? In truth, you have becomethe ride-or-die chick!

In Love with a Crackhead

From the start when I met him,
there wasn't anything bad anyone could say.
A void in my heart he filled.
A sense of completion to me he gave.

He took me to meet his parents, family, and childhood friends.
He showed me off in town,
telling everyone how his search for a wife had came to an end.

He takes time with my kids.
He is everything I could ever dream ...
until I started asking questions
and this man was not answering.

I gazed at him with tears in my eyes,
overwhelmed within with disgust.
Not knowing the reason for the lies
and thinking to myself,
"Hell, when is enough enough."

Three years,
and an investment this has become.
"Man, how could you lie about such a thing?"

All this time,
he has been playing Daddy to my kids.
I'm just finding out he has three.
So now I know he has three kids.
Where they are now remains unknown.

I'm still in shock,
wondering, "How could this information he withhold?"
So I asked, "Why didn't you tell me?"

Unable to find a reason,
he replies, "I didn't think anyone would want me with three,
but I still want you to be in my life."

Why did you have to lie?
Why not just come clean?
Why not give me the option to choose
if I would be dealing with this type of mess?

He blurts out
Kesha's,
Kiera's,
and Dominique's
name!

Wait a minute.
Hold on.
That was three.
Are you saying the name of your kids?
Or did I miss something?

Naw, baby.
Those are their mother's names.

Dude, I have to deal with three headaches?
Where are the kids?
Why aren't you around?

Things haven't been the same
since things went down.

Ah, hell,
what does that mean?

It's been three years since I been clean.

What?
Clean from what?
A bath?

No, it has been two years
since I went to rehab.

Jesus, help me.
What have I gotten myself into?
Here I am,
so in love.
But with who?
This man,
now I can't even describe.

A happy three years,
all taken away in
the matter of two months' time.

I can't believe anything he ever said.
I want to run after him and make him pay!
The only thing is I know I can't catch no
crackhead.
