Utilizing the author’s more than two decades of experience working on silicides and teaching a course on advanced materials, this text addresses the fundamental aspects related to structure, mechanical behavior, and the oxidation resistance of selected intermetallics and their composites. Rahul Mitra, is professor of metallurgical and materials engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Prior to that, he was a scientist at the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad. His research focuses primarily on processing as well as structure-property relations of silicide based intermetallic alloys, and metal and ceramic matrix composites for high temperature applications. Mitra received a B.Tech (Hons.) in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1988 and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, USA in 1992. He has authored or co-authored 110 publications in peer reviewed journals.
