Synopsis
Introduction to Human Geography: A World-Systems Perspective offers a thematic introduction to major themes with which the discipline of human geography is concerned and the primary modern academic paradigms on which it is based. The primary audience is college freshmen and sophomores, but advanced secondary students will also find the text accessible. The text is distinguished from similar treatments in that it introduces students to the basic concepts of World-Systems Analysis, and this approach to understanding long-term social, economic and political change at the global level is then employed to analyze, compare and contrast global differences in various aspects of the worlds human geography. While the text covers common themes in human geography (the geography of population, economic geography, political geography, language and religion), the overall aim is to provide students with a fuller understanding of development and underdevelopment in the global capitalist economy, how these differences emerged through time and space, and how these differences translate into varying cultural landscapes in different regions of the world.
