The head-quarters and western part of the force faces nearly south, the eastern part about south-south-east. The order in which the camps for the different units are placed is shown in the sketch. The dimensions of each camp are also given in the reference table attached thereto. The space between the engineer camp and the cavalry camp, is utilised as a general parade ground. The camps of the cavalry, engineers, and artillery are on perfectly level ground, but in the camps of the infantry battalions on the extreme west there is rather a slope. All the camps are on grass, those in the large 30 acre field being on grazing ground, and the others on the downs, which extend for some distance round the estate. (b) A good supply of excellent water is available from the brook. A place is established under a guard at the fork of the stream, where a dam and temporary reservoir are at once started to be formed; a field pump, fitted by the engineers to ensure a full supply, being kept up for use of the troops. Flying sentries or patrols will be sent up both streams to their sources (which are not more than half-a-mile off) to guard against pollution of the water taking place by washing or otherwise. A minimum allowance of one gallon per head, or a little more than 5,000 gallons, will be sufficient for drinking and cooking purposes. This can be easily turned out by the pumps at the reservoir. The water supply for the horses will be arranged just above the bridge. The left bank will be prepared by a working party for over 100 yards so as to allow of 100 horses drinking easily at one time.
