Mostly glabrous: stem erect, much branched: leaflets 2-5 pairs, elliptical-lanceolate, rigid, strongly veined; stipules lanceolate, semi-sagittate at base: peduncles 3-5flowered: flowers large, purple: segments of the calyx subulate, somewhat unequal, shorter than the tube: pod large, glabrous.--Throughout the Rocky Mountains of the United States. 4. Lathyrus leucanthus Rydb. Nearly glabrous, 2-3 dm. high: stem angled: stipules very narrow, semi-sagittate: leaflets 2-4 pairs, elliptic or narrower, veiny: racemes 2-4-flowered: calyx glabrous, cleft to the middle: corolla white or yellowish, about 15 mm. long; the banner broad.--Colorado to Utah and Nevada.
