Synopsis

This Package 1B contains the student handbook that is designed to accompany Package 1. Melinda J. Branscomb & Sue Ann Allen, An Interest-based Mediation - MEDIATOR-TRAINEE AND STUDENT HANDBOOK (2010) (www.MediationTrainingResources.com). Nonprofits and teachers purchase at $12-Contact SAAllen@kcdrc.org with name and type of organization for discount code. The MEDIATOR-TRAINEE AND STUDENT HANDBOOK is available to supplement the DVD, "AN INTEREST-BASED MEDIATION ... - A NARRATED MEDIATOR-TRAINING VIDEO," which is Package One of the authors' series of training materials. The HANDBOOK includes a full transcript of the DVD's narration, describing and explaining each stage of the mediation process. The Student Handbook also includes the film's screen shots, which are the bullet points summarizing key concepts discussed by the narrator. It includes the film's learning objectives, as well as informative background about the range of different mediator styles and approaches. It also includes a caucus exercise, in which students are given the transcript of two caucuses and are asked to identify precise moments where the mediator effectively used a number of specific skills and techniques. The Handbook also includes space for writing notes and questions as students watch the film in a class or workshop. Because the written transcript of the narration is included, students can focus on the techniques demonstrated on the screen and on class discussion while watching and critiquing the DVD, without having to try to write down the narrator's analysis as they hear it on the film. In this way, students can return to the Handbook later at their convenience to further study the narrator's explanations of the mediator's goals, techniques and objectives in each stage of mediation. (Note: The Teacher's Manual also is priced such that it could be required of students, as an alternative to the Student Handbook.)

The Seattle University law student teams she has coached in ABA mediation, client counseling, and negotiation competitions consistently have won top honors regionally and nationally. Prof. Branscomb received her B.A. at Vanderbilt University, cum laude, in 1972. She received her J.D. from the University of Tennessee School of Law in 1980 (Coif, first in class), where she was honored by the law faculty with a rare commendation for "Extraordinary Academic Achievement." Prior to entering law teaching in 1989, she clerked for the Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Tennessee, and practiced labor and employment law. SUE ANN ALLEN has twenty years experience as the Training Director for the Dispute Resolution Center of King County. In that capacity, she develops training programs and oversees the training of volunteer court and community mediators. She has served as a mediator for a wide variety of disputes in the work place, special education, faith-based groups, and the community. She has lived and worked in Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as in diverse communities in the U.S. She has been selected as one of five trainers for a national collaborative effort to develop and conduct training through the National Association for Community Mediation. She is one of a small cadre of trainers and mediators for a national conflict resolution team for a faith-based, peacemaking initiative of the Community of Christ.
