About the Author
Deanna York has taught chemistry for the past twenty years. She has been at Ben Davis High School since 1997. Prior to this she taught at Bloomingdale Senior High School in Valrico, Florida and at Lakeland Senior High School in Lakeland, Florida. Mrs. York teaches Advanced Placement Chemistry, International Baccalaureate Chemistry and Honors Chemistry. Mrs. York's forte is turning lectures and demonstrations into hands-on laboratory investigations and literacy activities. She uses inquiry labs for discovery, modified cookbook labs to teach content and procedures and problem based labs for authentic assessment. The students in Mrs. York's first year chemistry classes experience 100 hands-on laboratory investigations and activities per year! This fast laboratory centered pace is possible using the "teacher friendly" lab format found in the Teacher Friendly Chemistry Labs and Activities Books. As a teacher leader Mrs. York has served as a Building Literacy Leader, School Improvement Plan Chair, Lead Chemistry Teacher, President of the Indiana Alliance of Chemistry Teachers and Question Writer/Judge for the National Panasonic Academic Tournament. She has presented numerous workshops at the local, state and national level. Mrs. York has received many honors and awards for her excellence in teaching. She is the 2003 Indiana University Armstrong Educator Recipient, 2002 IPALCO Golden Apple Recipient, 2009 PAEMST Indiana State Finalist and the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching Recipient. She has been selected numerous times by a Top 30 Senior as their most influential teacher. Mrs. York has a B.S. in Secondary Education and a M.A. in General Science from Ball State University. She is also a graduate of the CIESC Teacher Leadership Academy. Mrs. York is the author of two "Teacher Friendly Chemistry" laboratory manuals and the website www.thechemistryteacher.net
