Synopsis

About The Author: I have been teaching ESL for 11 years. Though it is not a long time, compared to some, I have used the time to analyze how we can be more effective teachers. I have taught a wide variety of ideas. My students have usually several years of learning English. The question is why they cannot utilize what they have learned. I have found that many books do not build or create a foundation that moves the student forward. As Korea is a mono-culture, the traditional ESL books focus more on short segmented conversations. After hearing children yell "Hello!" all the time, you want to have a simple, but real, conversation. There are so many excuses not to learn in every culture. Having grown up in Africa for all of my developmental years I saw many people struggle to learn the different languages. What I learned was to analyze how we used culture to accelerate the learning of language, both written and spoken. It is possible to teach better, but focusing on how we communicate, and the relational value involved in communication, which is vital.
