Synopsis

"Sleigh Bells in Springtime" [Frogs Calling] is the story of a young girl who searches for the source of a sound and finds so much more: a love of frogs, a sense of place, quality time with her father and her sister, and the opportunity to participate in actual citizen science. Written in vivid verse with fun illustrations, "Sleigh Bells" connects to both the young and young at heart, inspiring people connect with spring peepers and a chorus of other calls, which, without the concerted effort of all of us, may be silenced forever. A fun story with many layers of depth, like the pond itself, "Sleigh Bells" ring, and it's great to read, read-aloud, or listen.

Chapter One

December is my favorite time of year. The nights are quiet, cold, and clear.

Except for my favorite jingling sound: Sleigh bells-I can't hear them all year round.

Santa Claus has come and gone; the snowman has melted from my lawn.

The sun is stronger. The days last longer.

Springtime brings new sounds and sights: flowers bloom and birds take flight.

But I miss the sleigh bells' ring. I miss the carols we used to sing.

Dad takes me to the park. We hike a trail with purple marks.

Under a log, we find a salamander and a snail. There was even fungus that looked like a turkey tail.

We cross a bridge over a stream. It wasn't as scary as it first seemed.

Then, we stood still and listened to the sounds: the wind, the birds, footsteps on the ground.

There was one sound especially loud. Sleigh bells-but where could they be found?

Sleigh bells-sleigh bells-that joyful ring! I search high and low, but don't see a thing.

The sound seems to be just out of reach, but Dad, as always, has something to teach.

"Keep walking," he says, "I know where to look. You'll find the mystery bells in a book."
