About the Author

TIMOTHY JAYNETimothy Jayne was born in Philadelphia on October 11, 1932 and lived at Lindenshade in Wallingford, Pennsylvania, which was his great grandfather, Horace Howard Furness' residence. The place was designed by Horace's brother Frank Furness, a Philadelphia architect, and it had been left to his father, Horace Howard Furness Jayne. Here Timothy was exposed to the works of William Henry Furness Jr. who was a portrait painter, as well as a collection of early painters owned by his father. His mother Henrietta Bache Jayne, the fourth great granddaughter of Benjamin Franklin, had inherited drawings by Benjamin Franklin as well as a collection of early European drawings, which are still used as a source of study. Timothy's experiences from birth to the world of fine arts and his ability to observe and draw led his parents to encourage him to draw. His first teacher was Benjamin Knotts, head of Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Later his family moved to Long Island and lived at the William Sydney Mount House where he was taught by the painter Thomas McFergus Cooper at the Old Field Lighthouse, in Setauket. When Timothy returned to Philadelphia, he had instruction under fine arts master Harris at Episcopal and after Army service attended Tyler School of Fine Arts of Temple University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. He followed this with training in Conservation and Restoration at Walter's Art Gallery of Baltimore. In 1959 Timothy was accepted at L'Institut Royal du Patrimone Artistique at Brussels, Belgium for training in conservation and fine arts directed by Dr. Paul Coremans. Upon returning to the United States he became Paintings Conservator at Winterthur for nine years until opening the Twistback Art Conservancy center with his wife Ruth.
