William Briggs (1861–1932) and the mathematician G. H. Bryan, a Fellow of the Royal Society, wrote the tutorial series that carried external students through the Intermediate and degree examinations of London. The Tutorial Algebra came out in two parts, and this is the second: the advanced course, published by W. B. Clive in 1898 and built on the plan of Professor Radhakrishnan's algebra, which its authors credited as a careful study of the best English authorities.

The advanced course picks up where the elementary volume stops, working through the convergence and summation of series, continuity and the elementary functions, complex quantities, finite differences, determinants, elimination, and the theory of equations. Each result is reached by example rather than asserted, and later reviewers of the series kept returning to the same praise: clear writing and close attention to detail. That is what makes it usable by a reader with nobody to ask.
