Synopsis
“The English Garden” is a detailed and interesting account of the history of the English garden from 1066 to the twentieth century by Ralph Dutton. Ralph Stawell Dutton (1898–1985) was the 8th and last Baron Sherborne famous for creating the gardens at Hinton Ampner near Alresford in Hampshire, England. When he died, he left the house and garden to the National Trust, and today it is open for the public to enjoy. This volume is highly recommended for gardening enthusiasts and those with an interest in the history of gardening. Contents include: “Introduction”, “The Search for Sustenance (1066-1500)”, “The Age of Symmetry (1500-1720)”, “The Return to Nature (1720-1900)”, “Features and Follies”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive.
