About the Author

Mike Baynham is Professor of TESOL in the School of Education at the University of Leeds. His professional background is in Adult ESL and Literacy. Before coming to Leeds, he spent ten years in Sydney at the University of Technology, Sydney where he was Director of the Centre for Language and Literacy, and before that he worked in London in Adult and Higher Education. He was Chair of the British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) for the period 2001-2003. Areas of interest include speech representation in both narrative and non narrative contexts and socially situated perspectives on literacy, in particular academic literacies, classroom discourse, language and maths.

Mastin Prinsloo is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, working in Applied Language and Literacy Studies. His publications includeThe Social Uses of Literacy (co-edited with Mignonne Breier, John Benjamins, 1996) and Literacies, Global and Local (co-edited with Mike Baynham, John Benjamins, 2008).
