Excerpt from Garibaldi and the Making of Italy: June-November, 1860
A previous volume entitled 'garibaldi and the Thou sand' described the landing at Marsala and the capture of Palermo by that handful of men in May, 1860. The present volume traces the course of larger military, diplomatic, and political events by which the original achievement of the Thousand led in six months to the formation of the Italian Kingdom.

G.M. Trevelyan was one of England's greatest historians, and in the second volume of this trilogy he describes the middle career of the man whom A.J.P. Taylor called 'the only wholly admirable figure in history.'
Trevelyan was an English historian whose work, written for the general reader as much as for the history student, shows an appreciation for the Whig traiditon in English thought and reflects a keen interest in the Anglo-Saxon element in the English constitution. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He became the Regius Professor of modern history at Cambridge in 1927 and master of Trinity College in 1940, retiring in 1951.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. In the wake of Garibaldi's stunning capture of Palermo in 1860, this book delves into the tumultuous six months that followed, a period that witnessed the birth of the Italian Kingdom. It weaves together a complex tapestry of regular and guerilla warfare, secret diplomacy, and political maneuvering across all levels of society. The narrative sweeps across the Italian peninsula and into the heart of European capitals, capturing the suspense and uncertainty that hung over the struggle for unification. This book explores how Italy, despite facing opposition from major European powers, narrowly avoided another setback like the failed revolution of 1848. It examines the deftness with which Cavour navigated the political landscape, the crucial role played by popular support for both Cavour and Garibaldi, and the almost mythical luck and military brilliance of Garibaldi himself. The author delves into the conflicting approaches of these two iconic figures, revealing how their contrasting strategies ultimately converged at the critical juncture to secure Italian unity. By illuminating the intricate dynamics at play during this pivotal period, this book offers profound insights into the complex process of nation-building and the delicate interplay of revolution, diplomacy, and popular will. It ultimately underscores the significance of 1860 as the year Italy truly became a nation, laying the groundwork for the eventual incorporation of Rome and Venice and the completion of the Risorgimento.
