A fresh English verse rendering of The Song of Roland paired with a thoughtful introduction.
This edition presents a new English verse translation of the classic epic, alongside an introduction that examines loyalty, heroism, and medieval life. It offers both the thrills of a renowned poem and guidance on its historical and cultural context. The introduction discusses how feudal ideals shaped the story, and why this epic has been influential in French history and literature. It situates the poem in its historical moment while inviting modern readers to consider its themes of duty, courage, and national unity.

Laisses CXIIa, CXlIb, CXIVa, CXlVb, CXIVc, CXXVa, CXXVllla, CXXVIIlb, CXXVIIlc, CXXVIIld, C4LIVa, CLIVa, are supplied from other sources than the basic text, with a view to filling up certain lacunre in the narrative. Other interpolations and deviations; are indicated in the notes. It would be impossible. to enumerate the various kindnesses shown me by others in carrying ·out this little adventure.
