Synopsis

Explore practical philosophy that weighs faith, truth, and social duty against everyday life. This collection examines how ethical ideas shape personal choices, institutions, and the common good, with clear questions about religion, truthfulness, and moral responsibility.

This edition gathers essays that probe the role of religion in society, the constraints of honesty, and the way we balance personal conviction with communal norms. It asks how we should live when beliefs and loyalties pull in different directions, and what makes a moral act truly good.

  • See how utilitarian thinking informs judgments about truth-telling, conscience, and social duty.

  • Understand arguments about religious conformity, multiple beliefs, and the protection of moral values.

  • Consider real‑world cases and thought experiments that illuminate responsibility and character.

  • Learn how ethical theories translate into everyday actions and public life.

Ideal for readers of philosophical ethics and readers curious about how big ideas apply to daily living, institutions, and policy.

Product Description

Excerpt from Practical Ethics: A Collection of Addresses and Essays

Along with these addresses I have included four papers, having, either in whole or in part, similarly practical aims. Two of these, on Public Morality and Clerical Veracity, and part of a third, on the Pursuit of Culture, are published here for the first time. I have placed each of the three either before or after the address that appeared most cognate in subject. The connection is closest in the case of the paper on Clerical Veracity; which is, in fact, a fuller exposition - called forth by contro versy - Of my views on a portion of the subject of the address that precedes it. The last paper in the volume - on Unreasonable Action - I have not included without some hesitation, as it was written primarily from a psychological rather than a practical point of view: but on the whole it appeared to me to have sufi'icient ethical interest to justify its inclusion.

Review

"Sidgwick's Practical Ethics is a remarkable collection of engaging essays by a philosopher-economist who was deeply humane as well as fiercely rational. His ideas and critical scrutinies remain as relevant and useful today as they were when this book was first published a hundred years ago. An
illuminating introduction by Sissela Bok--herself a leading contributor to practical ethics--adds to the attractions of this wonderful book."--Amartya Sen, Professor of Economics and Philosophy, Harvard University
"It is good to see Henry Sidgwick's Practical Ethics available again. Here he writes not as moral theorist but as an engaged reformer, who understood how hard it is to improve institutions and to live well. Like Sidgwick we ask whether those in public office may lie and whether it is wrong to enjoy
luxury when others are destitute; now we can enjoy his principled yet realistic discussions of these and other dilemmas."--Onora O'Neill, Principal, Newnham College, Cambridge
