Synopsis

There are three Alphabets in which Pāli manuscripts are written-the Sinhalese, the Burmese and the Kambodian. They all are derived from the Aēoka Alphabet used in the ancient inscriptions of India, but represent a more current and an easier style of writing. The Devanāgarī Alphabet, which was used by Spiegel in editing his Anecdota Pālica, is never found in Pāli manuscripts. We shall, however, for the convenience of those who have studied Samskrit, in the following table give the Devānagarī letters corresponding to the Sinhalese characters. Since Fausboll's edition of the Dharmnapada, published in 1855, nearly all editors of Pāli books in Europe have made use of the Roman character, as being easier to learn and less tiring to the eye. Unfortunately, a uniform way of transcription has not yet been arrived at in Pāli, any more than in Sanskrit ; but the method followed by Fausbōll and Childers is now almost generally adopted, aud shall also be uacd in
