Excerpt from Journey From London to Genoa, Vol. 3: Through England, Portugal, Spain, and France
By this grave and prolix proem you will fee at once, that I am far from hay; ing adopted the far-fpread notion, that the Spaniards are naturally idle. If they do lefs than the Englifh, the'dutch, or any other prefent nation; it is for no other reafon than that they have lefs to do. Put them in a condit1on to be more active, and more active they will be. I judge of this by what pafi'es actually un der my eyes. I go to fee them in their ihops and other places where any work is going on, and I find that they do what they have to do with becoming cheat fulnefs and fpeed.
