Synopsis

In a diverse, often embattled universe, inappropriate behavior is commonly observed, especially between various ethnic groups. What is not common is one individual writing about his experiences, his successes and mistakes, reflecting on how he came to that place and what he learned from the experience. In most instances, the subject is racism. Robert R. Dunwell's Essays in Ethnocentrism: the Good the Bad and the Ugly explores racism with unusual candor. Professor Emeritus in Education at Washburn University, Dunwell shares more than sixty years of personal growth, often exposing self-inflicted wounds resulting from that brand of unintentional racism and judgment learned from our childhood, our various communities, social groups and work groups. With every essay in which the author exposes a poignant vignette, there comes to the reader understanding of why. The power comes not from one wise academic delivering an apologia, but from a sincere and intelligent study of how we think and feel about our fellow man.
