When Michael nearly steps on a mushroom, the indignant mushroom first turns purple, then becomes yellow with alarm. As Michael learns to understand the colors of the mushroom's moods, he and the mushroom end up at pink, the color of their friendship. One day, Michael is devastated to find the mushroom has been uprooted by animals while he has been staying with his sick grandmother. Even though it has been uprooted, the mushroom helps Michael find a way to make his beloved grandmother better. And through his grandmother, Michael learns that he has not lost the mushroom.
