William Hale White was a British civil servant who used the pseudonym Mark Rutherford. He was educated to be a Congregational minister but decided to become a clerk in the admiralty. Rutherford is most noted for his three autobiographical novels. Catharine Furze was set in the year 1840. Catherine is the only daughter of simple country folk. Her father is the largest ironmonger in a small town. Catherine has feelings for the local minister who is already married.
