Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729 - 1781) was the foremost German playwright of the Enlightenment. His work with the leading German acting companies of the day resulted in three major plays, a large body of criticism, and an important contribution to dramatic theory--the Hamburgische Dramaturgie. His work was influential on the major authors that followed him, such as Schiller and Goethe, and his plays continue to be read and performed all over the German-speaking world to this day.
