About the Author

Nina Mold's great-grandfather. Raleigh Alonzo Scott, was born into slavery, the illegitimate son of an African mother and a Native American indian father. He was freed in 1899 and made his way to England to spread the gospel. He preached at a small chapel in Chesterfield where he was known by his indian name, Wallawatha. He married a local woman but, when their son was only four years old, he abandoned them, forcing his wife into service and ensuring young Raleigh suffered depression and feelings of rejection all his life. He never fulfilled his dream of traveling to America to find his father. He ended his life in 1969 in a suicide pact with his only child, Joan.Joan's daughter, Nina, was born in Manchester, England in 1952. She moved to America, aged 8, when her divorced mother, following her own father's dream, married a U.S. ex-serviceman. The marriage was disastrous, but Nina fell deeply in love with America. She returned to England with her mother and, within months had lost her mother, grandparents and natural father in tragic circumstances. Nina and her sister, Pamela, had no other relatives. They were sixteen and eighteen years old respectively. Nina found clerical work , married at eighteen and had two sons. She never finished her education, but passed the entrance exam to join the British prison service and served for nineteen years. She took early retirement in 2003 to fulfil her lifelong dream of moving back to America, this time with her second husband and two daughters. She now runs a small business in Naples, Florida.
