Ram¿n Francisco Villarreal has devoted more than half a century to helping the under privileged get ahead in life through a better education. His latest effort, Recuerdos de mi Barrio, while a personal memoir, is also a historical view of life in a poor neighborhood in rural Kansas in the 1940s and the lessons he learned of how to overcome life's day-to-day obstacles. What he learned most from those struggles-and triumphs-was that the path to success is through education. The Center is one of ten federally funded centers that provide technical assistance and training to school educators in their respective regions. The Interwest EAC is based in Denver but attached to the CSU School of Education. The program provides him so much comfort and pleasure that he says:"I have no notions of retiring again until and unless the federal funding dries up." He retired in 1999 as an investigator and manager in the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights with more than 30 years of federal service. The weekend after his official retirement, he went to work for the Center. His service to the advancement of civil rights spans more than fifty years. Along the way, he listened patiently to the complaints from students, teachers and administra
