Walter H. Baily lives on an old farm in southwestern Maine. A social worker throughout his career, he was employed in hospital, mental health, public health, and planning services. He and his wife, Thelma, also a social worker, taught at the undergraduate level for five years. After publishing a book on child welfare, they assisted state and nongovernmental agencies to develop definitions of child abuse and neglect and to construct policies for child protection. Baily, who holds a doctorate from Catholic University of America, has two sons, a daughter, and two grandchildren. Now at the age of eighty, he takes pleasure in managing a certified tree farm, and he takes part in community activities.
