"The dream of Pharaoh is one. The seven kine are seven years; and the seven good ears are seven years: the dream is one.... And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice, it is because the thing is established."... In other words: Behind three or four subtitles and changes of time, scene, characters, this tale of strong hearts is one. And for that the tale is tripled or quadrupled unto you three or four times (the number will depend); it is because in each of its three or four aspects - or separate stories, if you insist - it sets forth, in heroic natures and poetic fates, a principle which seems to me so universal that I think Joseph would say of it also, as he said to the sovereign of Egypt, "The thing is established of God."

"The Solitary," "The Taxidermist," and "The Entomologist" all take place in south Louisiana and include Creole characters, among others. The first is about a timid man with a tortured soul who thinks the world is too big and complex for him. A surprising friendship, a sudden stroke of good fortune, and a potential disaster with an unexpected outcome take place in the second. And the last story tells of a collection of unusual relationships met with subsequent tragedy.
This collection of short stories has a singular synthesis that is sure to incite interest and please the soul with its colorful tales. Each tells of strength of spirit and of heart.
George Washington Cable (October 12, 1844 – January 31, 1925) was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native New Orleans, Louisiana. He has been called "the most important southern artist working in the late 19th century, as well as the first modern southern writer." In his treatment of racism, mixed-race families and miscegenation, his fiction has been thought to anticipate that of William Faulkner.
